If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that telling yourself you’ll “just read one chapter” is one of the biggest lies a book lover can tell.
That’s exactly what happened when I started Storm Breaker by Nisha J. Tuli. One chapter turned into several, and before I knew it, I was completely invested in Poet’s journey, the dangerous trials, the unique magic system, and a romance that slowly builds with plenty of tension.
If you’re searching for your next YA dystopian/romantasy obsession, here’s why Storm Breaker deserves a spot on your TBR.

Synopsis of Storm Breaker

From the publisher who brought you Fourth Wing comes your next romantasy obsession…
WELCOME TO AMERY ACADEMY.
SURVIVE THE TRIALS.
HIDE YOUR POWER.
DON’T FALL FOR THE ENEMY.
For nineteen-year-old Poet Graves, obedience has always been survival.
Raised among the ruling elite of New Manhattan and trapped in an arranged future she never chose, Poet arrives at Amery Academy knowing exactly what’s expected of her: stay quiet, stay loyal, and never let anyone discover the dangerous secret hiding beneath her skin.
Because the storms ravaging the wasteland beyond the city walls don’t fear Poet.
They obey her.
Then she meets Rook―a mysterious outsider from the enemy faction her people were raised to hate.
He’s dangerous.
Forbidden.
And the first person who makes Poet want something more than survival.
But Amery’s brutal trials are designed to expose weakness, and someone is hunting the truth about Poet’s power. If she loses control, she could destroy everything―including herself.
Storm Breaker Book Review
Storm Breaker follows a young woman desperate to escape a toxic past while fighting for her freedom in a world filled with dangerous competitions, political intrigue, and powerful storm magic. Every challenge forces her to question who she can trust as alliances shift, betrayals emerge, and survival becomes more difficult with every page.
⚡ The Storm Magic
As a fantasy reader, I love coming across a book that has magic in it. Here and there, I will find some new elements and that really excites me. Storm Breaker introduces an exciting storm-based magic system that feels original while remaining easy to understand. It’s one of my favorite parts of the novel. The way the magic impacts the characters, its history, and the challenges behind it truly intrigue me. I’m excited to learn even more about it in the next book.
❤️ The Slow-Burn Romance
The romance is definitely a slow burn. Rather than relying on spice, the story builds emotional tension through trust, conflict, and shared danger. Watching the relationship develop naturally made every interaction more rewarding. If you enjoy romance that’s built on chemistry instead of instant attraction, you’ll appreciate this one. Though, we still have a lot to discover, I’m very excited to read book 2 and get to know a little more about the male character.
🗡️ High-Stakes Trials
I’m always a sucker for deadly competitions. Every challenge pushes the characters physically and emotionally, keeping the pacing quick and making it difficult to stop reading. There were several moments where I genuinely didn’t know what would happen—and I really enjoyed how Poet always rose to the challenge and how she navigated them knowing the consequences of her actions.
😱 Twists That Keep You Guessing
One of my favorite aspects was learning all the story and seeing it unraveling. I absolutely love seeing the character challenge the order but also love seeing her challenged. Her system of belief was also challenged. The ability to change character’s perspectives and the narrative truly pulled me into this story. Poet is the underdog, and she is so strong for choosing a better outcome for her life. She has a toxic past. I absolutely loved seeing her take charge of her own life.
