If you’re looking for a romantasy that doesn’t pull its punches, Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe needs to move straight to the top of your TBR. I went in expecting a fun enemies-to-lovers read and came out emotionally devastated in the best possible way. Here’s my spoiler-free review of book one in The Heart Duology.

Book Review: Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe
Thoughts
I read Daggermouth by H.M. Wolfe and absolutely loved it! This author woke up one day and chose violence and I mean that as the highest compliment. 😂 From the emotional devastation to the constant tension, this story pulled me in.
This is a true enemies-to-lovers fantasy filled with political intrigue, dangerous power struggles, and incredibly high stakes. The characters are morally gray, complicated, and deeply shaped by the brutal system in which they live. Their actions are influenced by trauma, fear, grief, loss, and injustice, which adds so much depth to their choices, even when those choices are difficult to understand or forgive.
What I appreciated most was how the story explored the ways people adapt when they are forced to survive in an unfair world. These characters are not simply good or evil. They are products of their experiences, and the author allows us to see the pain and motivations behind their decisions. That complexity made their relationships and conflicts even more compelling.
The story is told through multiple points of view, but each perspective flowed naturally into the next. I never felt lost or overwhelmed by the different storylines. Instead, the changing POVs helped reveal the larger political picture while allowing me to understand the characters on a much more personal level. Their individual stories intertwined beautifully, creating a layered world full of secrets, shifting loyalties, and emotional tension.
The slow-burn romance was another highlight. Note: There are some spicy scenes, which read more as adult or new adult than YA. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic felt genuine, and the relationship developed alongside the political conflict rather than taking attention away from it. Combined with the other intertwined stories, it kept me invested from beginning to end.
Daggermouth is heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, and completely captivating. It is the kind of page-turner that makes you desperate to know what happens next while also making you nervous about what the author might put these characters through. That ending is one I did NOT see coming and book two only comes out next year. I can’t wait!! I’m already counting down the days!
