Thoughts
During my first read, Nesta frequently annoyed and frustrated me. She can be harsh, angry, and incredibly difficult to understand. This time, however, I was able to see beyond that anger and recognize the tremendous amount of pain beneath it. Her behavior is not always easy to excuse, but understanding where it comes from made me appreciate the complexity of her character so much more.
Nesta’s journey is filled with powerful twists and turns, painful setbacks, and moments of real growth. Her pain practically bleeds through the pages, making her healing feel honest rather than easy or rushed. She does not suddenly become a different person. Instead, she slowly learns how to confront her trauma, accept support, and believe that she deserves more than the life she has been allowing herself to live.
One of the most beautiful parts of the story is watching Nesta build meaningful friendships. The women she meets do not simply rescue her; they stand beside her, challenge her, and give her a safe place to begin rebuilding herself. Their friendship and unwavering support become an essential part of her healing. The sense of sisterhood and found family they create is powerful, emotional, and incredibly moving to witness.
I also loved watching Nesta’s relationship with Cassian grow. He supported her through it all, even when she tried to push him away. He challenged her, believed in her strength, and stood beside her during some of her darkest moments. Their love slowly blossomed through the pages, making their relationship feel passionate, emotional, and deeply connected to Nesta’s healing journey.
The romance is passionate and intense, but Nesta’s personal growth remains at the heart of the story. Her journey through grief, self-hatred, anger, and fear gives the book so much emotional weight. Watching her gradually rediscover her strength—and begin to see herself as worthy of friendship, love, and forgiveness—was heartbreaking and beautiful.
As always, Sarah J. Maas’s writing is completely captivating. She has a way of creating characters whose emotions feel almost tangible, and Nesta’s pain is especially vivid throughout this book. Although I struggled with her during my first read, this reread gave me a much deeper understanding of her character and made me appreciate her story in an entirely new way.
