Synopsis:
OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE. Adrienne Young – Sky in the Deep
Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.
Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.
She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

Review
Sky in the Deep was featured in one of my book-box subscriptions a few months back. I picked up the book this month out of curiosity. My friends on Instagram raved about it, all saying that it was a pleasant surprise. I’m a mood reader and these comments sparked my curiosity. This book has been a complete surprise. I’m warning you—it’s a heck of a ride. I haven’t been hooked on a book like this in a while. This is the kind of book I can read in one sitting, but when you have a little kid, completing a task requires more time.
About the Story
The opening chapter sets the tone early. The book is fast paced and keeps you on your toes. The story unfolds in a way that challenges the characters and keeps the stakes high, and the intrigue will make you want to know what happens next. I loved the character development of the main protagonist. It was nicely done. She is one badass character, a warrior and more. There is nothing sweet in her reality and the story behind each clan is brilliantly thought out. The love interest was obvious but nice. The romance wasn’t what appealed most to me, but it remains a nice development.
Overall, this riveting YA story is about faith, family, acceptance, love, and loss. I felt so much for the characters. A must read!
I highly recommend this book. One of my highlights in 2018.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Note: Adrienne Young’s companion’s book, The Girl The Sea Gave Back, will be released at the end of 2019. I can’t wait to read it!
