Today, I’m excited to host this Q&A with Liz Delton. The Alchemyst’s Mirror will be released on October 27, 2020. To celebrate the upcoming release of her new novel, the author answers a few questions for us.
Thank you so much, Liz Delton, for having me on this tour and for gifting a beautiful copy of the book.
Interview – Liz Delton
Q: What inspired you to write this story?
A: It began with the alchemy influence, and I knew I wanted to write a book with steampunk elements. Eventually I realized how fun it would be to write the characters in a setting that I could really relate to: a tea shop. So Everturn’s Finest Tea Shop was born, along with the mysterious disappearance of one of the Everturns.
I picked a tea shop because I am a notorious tea addict. Years ago I worked in a tea shop and learned a lot about different teas, and these days you won’t find me far from one of my favorite mugs.
Q: Describe your main character in 3 words.
- Petra: Meticulous, loyal, and persistent
- Maisie: Cheerful, optimistic, and fearless
Q: What was the most challenging part to write in this book?
A: The biggest part I struggled with was a logistic thing—there is a point where one character goes on a sea voyage for about a week, and getting all the timelines to match up was surprisingly difficult. I can thank all my beta readers for giving me a hand fixing this one!
Q: What’s a typical writing day for you?
A: I don’t have a very typical day anymore, since my now two-year-old was born. I get my writing in whenever I can throughout the day. Luckily, I’m pretty good at just sitting down at the keyboard and cranking out some words—unless I get distracted by one of my many other projects!
Q: How would your main character fare with a stay-at-home order?
A: I think Petra would love it at first; she would take the time to do a full-scale cleaning of the tea shop and reorganize everything. But Maisie would probably go stir-crazy with no one to bake for except her and Petra. Eventually Petra would probably run out of ways to be productive, and just drown her sorrows in scones. Maisie would start reading her way through their father’s library.
Q: What author or story inspired you growing up or inspired you in some ways?
A: I read a lot of Tamora Pierce when I was younger, there were two series in particular that were my favorite, that I still own to this day. I just loved the fierce, independent heroines she wrote in such magical places.
