P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, Authors of Forgotten – Interview
Q1. How do you organize the writing? Do each of you have a specific role?
PC: I do all the writing in the HoN. Kristin has always been my frontline editor. When we do write together on other series, we divide up the characters and whichever character is in the forefront of the chapter dictates which of us does the writing in that chapter.
Q2. What does a typical writing day look like? How do you keep yourself accountable?
PC: I write at night. I usually start about 7:00-8:00 pm and write until midnight to 2:00 a.m. or so. I’m a professional author, which means I have contracted deadlines to meet and my writing pays my bills and supports my family – that keeps me accountable. Being an author is a job like any other. How do you stay accountable your profession?
KC: My workday looks like most people’s workday. I start working when I get to my office in the morning and I leave my office late afternoon/evening when my son’s nanny leaves for the day. How does anyone keep themselves accountable? I can say that I take myself out to dinner after I finish a project or award myself with little stickers when I’ve accomplished something on my work to-do list, but really, I do my job to help support my family. I’m lucky that I also happen to enjoy it.
Q3. What is your current read?
PC: I’m reading the third book in Dean Koontz’s awesome Jane Hawk series. Koontz is a long-time fav of mine.
KC: Currently, I’m reading The Whole-Brain Child by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. My toddler fascinates me and I want to be sure I’m able to nurture and support him as he grows.
Q4. Who/what book inspired your writing?
PC: I’ve been writing since first grade, so I couldn’t possibly list all the authors who have and still inspire me, but Anne McCaffrey will always hold a special place in my heart as her Dragonriders of Pern books showed me (at the age of thirteen) that women could write and start in fantasy/sci-fi books.
KC: PC inspired me to be an author. Without her, I’d be doing something else entirely.
Q5. What would be your advice for new writers?
PC: Treat the job of being an author as you would any other. Research publishing. Know how a manuscript goes from a rough draft to the shelves of Barnes and Noble. If you’re serious about being a career author take off the rose coloured glasses and understand the process.
KC: Not to worry about book titles or character names. So many times trying to figure out the exact right name for your protagonist can cost you days of writing. If I’m stuck on a character name or book title, (titles can always be changed by the publisher), I’ll write something like HERO or CHARACTER and continue on about my business until I’m finished with the story. Then, I can spend time researching and go back and replace whichever placeholder name I chose.
Q6. Which one of your characters would you want to spend a day and why?
PC: Grandma Redbird because she is an exceptional human being.
KC: Aphrodite. She’d be a lot of fun!
Q7. Is there anything you can tell us about the books that’s not on the blurb and not a spoiler?
PC: Yep! Keep an eye on the House of Night Facebook page for news about the TV series!
Thank you so much, P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, for taking the time to answer these questions.
Happy Publication Day!
Synopsis
Before he was freed by Neferet, Kalona was imprisoned within the earth for centuries because of the Darkness in his heart. But what happened to the Other World’s Kalona? It’s as though he’s been forgotten, or maybe he never existed at all …
In the present, Other Neferet may have left her House of Night, but she has far from given up her goal of immortality and world domination. As she operates in secret to gain access to Old Magick, the new High Priestess, Anastasia Langford, works toward peace and acceptance for the vampyres of the Other World. But just as Other Kevin’s broken heart will take time to heal, peace in that world will also take time and work—and not all of the Other World vampyres want peace. After all, why should they return to being shunned by humans, especially when they’ve had a taste of how it feels to be in power?
Meanwhile, Zoey is desperate to help rid the Other World of Neferet once and for all, and not knowing what’s going on over there is eating away at her. But, as the Nerd Herd warns, it’s far too dangerous to call on Old Magick time and again. As a distraction, she throws herself into her work and attempts to bring the humans and vampyres of Tulsa closer together with the first human-vampyre swim meet in history! It’s too bad that something always seems to go wrong whenever the stakes are high.
What happens when worlds clash and powers that should be left alone are awakened? Can Other Kevin and his world heal from the wounds Neferet continues to inflict? Can Old Magick ever truly be harnessed and used for good? Or will Darkness extinguish Light and leave our heroes broken, hopeless, and as forgotten as Kalona of the Silver Wings? Don’t miss this second to last volume in the House of Night Other World saga!
