Kester Grant, Author of The Court of Miracles – Q&A
What was your most favorite part to write and why?
Any scene with Enjolras or Montparnasse in, because they are such a delight to write. Enjolras especially – simply because he says more, and is soooo intensely obsessed with his ideals, that his scenes give me SO MUCH JOY.
What was your last 5 star read and why?
How the Girl Guides Won the War.
It is a fascinating heartwarming/heartbreaking look at how much the Girl Guides did in WW2. I cried several times reading this non-fiction gem and highlighted almost the entire book.
Is there something you can tell us (without spoilers) about this book that is not in the blurb?
TCOM features the subject of human trafficking, and I still remember as a precocious reader, being super young when I found out that adults and children were still trafficked into sexual slavery the world over. It was a traumatic moment, a feeling of being vastly overwhelmed by the sheer breadth of my privilege in the face of such unspeakable evil, a moment of growing up and seeing a crack in the fabric of the world.
I’ve done some social work with peoples who are most at risk from this type of thing and will never forget my experiences. I think TCOM was in a way, a subconscious ache to bring this subject to light – and emphasize that it still goes on today. I can’t do much, but I do have a small voice, and I desire to use it to speak for those who have no voice.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, KESTER GRANT, FOR ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS!
The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant – Synopsis
Les Misérables meets Six of Crows in this page-turning adventure as a young thief finds herself going head to head with leaders of Paris’s criminal underground in the wake of the French Revolution.
In the violent urban jungle of an alternate 1828 Paris, the French Revolution has failed and the city is divided between merciless royalty and nine underworld criminal guilds, known as the Court of Miracles.
Eponine (Nina) Thénardier is a talented cat burglar and member of the Thieves Guild. Nina’s life is midnight robberies, avoiding her father’s fists, and watching over her naïve adopted sister, Cosette (Ettie). When Ettie attracts the eye of the Tiger–the ruthless lord of the Guild of Flesh–Nina is caught in a desperate race to keep the younger girl safe. Her vow takes her from the city’s dark underbelly to the glittering court of Louis XVII.
And it also forces Nina to make a terrible choice–protect Ettie and set off a brutal war between the guilds, or forever lose her sister to the Tiger.
