Today, I’m thrilled to host this Q&A with the author of The Bone Thief. To celebrate her new release, Breeana Shields is answering a few questions about her writing, the book, and her creative process.

What do you enjoy most about writing?

I love a perfect writing day—one where I get in a good workflow and hours slip like minutes. It’s a magical feeling and, unfortunately a pretty rare one. Usually I’m coaxing reluctant words onto the page, but when things really click, and I manage to write a lot in a single day? Ahhh, there’s no feeling like it!

How did you find inspiration for this book? Did you already have all the books mapped out when you started?

I talked about my inspiration for THE BONE CHARMER at another stop on the tour, but THE BONE THIEF was totally different. I didn’t have anything about the second book planned out when I finished the first.

The only thing I knew is that Saskia would be raw, hurting, and out for revenge. So, as I plotted, I tried to think of the framework I would enjoy most as a reader. What would expand the world and deepen the characters? What would I want to see more of? It was so much fun to return to this world, and I think I loved writing the second book even more than the first.

Is there something you can tell us (without spoilers) about this book that is not in the blurb?

Sure! Any reader of THE BONE CHARMER who wanted to know more about the other bone magics and how they work are in luck! THE BONE THIEF delves much more deeply into the training at Ivory Hall.

What is your last five-star read and what made you rate it this way?

I just finished Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield and I loved it. It’s the kind of book you want to savor—lovely lyrical writing, a cast of compelling characters, and delicious mystery all set against the backdrop of an atmospheric setting full of legends and lore. It reads like a fairy tale and I thought it was beautiful.

If you could live in a bookish world, which one would you pick and why?

Is it a cliché to say Hogwarts? Because I’d really love to kick back in the common room with a butterbeer after a day of learning magic!
