Some of you may know, but my love for books knows no boundaries. Not only do I have a book blog, but I also have a Bookstagram. A Bookstagram is an Instagram account dedicated to books. Yes! That is a thing. 🙂 So let me explain a little what I do with it and how I do it.
#Bookstagram 101
Beginner’s Guide to Bookstagram
Bookstagram – What is it?
Let’s start with a little bit of explanation. Bookstagram, as mentioned before, is a (usually public) Instagram account dedicated to your love for books regardless of the genre. The idea behind this creative outlet is to connect with other book lovers. This is a fantastic opportunity to share book recommendations, find out about book trends, and discuss your passion for a specific genre, a particular book, or even an author with like-minded individuals.
The same way some people may have a passion for discovering new places, displays of old cars, or even homemade food. On Instagram, there is an outlet for books. If you want an example, here is my Bookstagram.
On this platform, there is no age, gender preference, etc… The only thing that matters is your love for books and your ability to respect one another. Don’t be judgemental! Not everyone will think the way you do, and that’s perfectly ok. I do not have many friends who enjoy reading what I like, so I’ve found this platform to be perfect for me. I’ve met truly amazing and genuinely good people there. I hope you do too.
What do you need to create a Bookstagram?
An account on Instagram
I strongly recommend to set up a business account versus a personal account. Business accounts will give you access to more features such as stats on performance, which will help you decide what kind of pictures your audience enjoys the most. There are many more features, but I won’t go into details. Just know that this is free and easy to set up.
Books
I want to say this part is important since you’re trying to convey your love for books, but I don’t mean you need to buy tons of books. You could use books from the library, Kindle books, your friends’ books, or at a bookstore as long as you have permissions.
Camera
This one sounds obvious, but I wanted to state it for the sake of it. I don’t own a fancy camera. I only use my phone, and it does the job, so pick what works best for you.
Photo Background
The drop back I use is one I found on Amazon, but you can use anything from a sheet or a wall to your own room or living room. Here is the sister photo background I bought. They don’t have the same anymore, but it costs me about the same – $9. Again, you don’t need to spend money to express your love. Be creative! Think outside the box.
Props
While this is not vital, it’s always nice to have some props. I usually use the same props for a period of time. I found them at home, on Amazon, at Michaels or Joanns or even Target. Whatever is on sale. You can also use plants, outside landscapes, Christmas decoration you already own, a cup of coffee, a plate of food… There are so many things you can use without spending money. It’s up to you.
Canva
This app is not essential, but I already use it for my blog. I use the paid version for the graphics on my blog, but it’s a good way for me to add my Instagram handle on my pictures because a few times, I’ve stumbled upon individuals who used my picture as theirs. That annoyed me, so at least I have my name on it now. I do believe in respect. I will not use a picture without proper credit and permission, please do the same. This community is amazing, let’s keep it this way.
Note: There are many more things you could do, but I think this covers the basics. Do you have a Bookstagram? Drop a link to your profile in the comment, and I will follow you. This community is about sharing and reciprocation. I usually like and comment on anyone’s page. You take the time to do it for me, so I will too.
For authors, Instagram is a great platform to promote your books. Here are 35 ideas.
The most important part is to have fun and make friends. This is a fantastic community and they are worth getting to know. I’ve read great books thanks to them. You can vent if you need to, they’ll be here to listen (as long as you’re doing it in a respectful manner). BE YOU!
Happy Reading all!
I’ve been bookstagramming for almost 4 years but I still like to see tips from others, especially when the algorithm means my posts aren’t getting seen. I’m here – https://www.instagram.com/always_need_more_books/ (I’ve just followed you, your pictures are lovely). I don’t have a business account – do you see any disadvantages to having one?
I would say it all depends on the use you have of Instagram. I would say if you share pictures that you don’t mind seen by everyone, then it’s always better to have a public account. Otherwise keep your personal account. But business accounts give you insights on your performance. You can see you look at your stories consistently. Things you can do without, but it’s nice to have. No disadvantages to own one. I would say you make it what you want it to be.
Bookstagramming is fun but I don’t get very good reach or engagement.
thanks for this post though

Instagram is hard to people for sure. It favors those who are consistent, share stunning visual, and engage the most.
