the wrong bachelor

Book Review: The Wrong Bachelor by Alexandra Moody

Looking for a swoon-worthy romance, stop here. You found it! To all fans of the TV Reality shows, The Bachelor, this novel will be perfect for you. The Wrong Bachelor written by Alexandra Moody was a nice surprise.

The second half of October was insane for me. Between traveling and the writing conference, I came home exhausted. Unfortunately, my reading was affected in some ways. I’m a mood reader, as I’m sure many of you are. I was browsing books on Amazon–looking for something entertaining enough to push away the exhaustion—when I stumbled upon this book. I thought, why not? It’s available on Kindle Unlimited, and although it wasn’t quite what I was going for initially, the story seemed interesting.

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Unlike many of my friends, I may have watched The Bachelor on TV a very long time ago, and I never really liked it. (No judgment, please! It’s just not for me.) So, I was a little skeptical when I started reading this book and was therefore surprised that I truly liked it, even though I still don’t enjoy its concept.

SYNOPSIS:

The Wrong Bachelor
The Wrong Bachelor by Alexandra Moody

Format: e-Book (Kindle) – 282 pages

Description:

Bachelor: A desirable potential boyfriend. AKA not Cole Kingston.

Seventeen-year-old Madison (Madi) Matthews wants nothing to do with the dating competition her school is holding to raise money for charity. She’s never been interested in chasing a guy before and she certainly isn’t interested in competing for one in front of the whole school.

But, when Madi is voted as one of the ten “lucky” contestants, she’s given no choice but to vie for the heart of Lincoln High’s most eligible bachelor. The problem is, they’ve chosen the wrong guy.

Cole Kingston might be good looking, great with a football and practically the king of Lincoln High, but he’s also cocky, arrogant, a serial flirt and Madi’s sworn enemy.

Will she be able to resist him though when the competition heats up and he turns his charms on her?

Genre: YA contemporary (Romance)

REVIEW:

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Disclaimer: This review doesn’t contain any spoilers, and the opinions expressed are my own. I found this book on Kindle Unlimited.

The novel is a lovely YA contemporary story that takes places after the terrible wildfire that swept the West Coast a couple of years ago. A school organizes a charity event to support the victims, and one group of students decides to host its own version of The Bachelor, with all the money generated from votes being donated to the charity.

The story that revolves around this event is, for the most part, light-hearted and funny. That said, the book does broach the subject of bullying and its aftermath. It also explores human nature through the lens of TV reality shows and focuses on how gossips can affect teenagers at school. The main character is confronted to all these issues in some ways, and it was a good reminder that bullying shouldn’t be taken lightly and we should always speak up. In these sections of the book, the characters face true contemporary issues.

In presenting the main characters, the author uses a dual point of view. The novel alternates between the point of view of the two characters, offering the reader a better understanding of the characters and their motivation. It also makes them relatable, which is important. I love the banter and interaction between the two leads, and their story unfolds in such beautiful ways. The main female character, Madi, is flawed, and this is well-executed. It leads to an expected change at the end—one the reader will want to see. The supporting characters are adorable and funny. I genuinely enjoyed reading about them.

Overall, this book was perfect for what I needed: a good laugh, a swoon-worthy story, and characters who learn to stand up for themselves. I hope you enjoy this book if you decide to read it.
