Synopsis

Spellhacker by M.K. England synopsis

From the author of The Disasters, this genre-bending YA fantasy heist story is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.

In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.
Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.

But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.

No pressure.

Review

Book review - Spellhacker by M.K. England (YA Fantasy/Sci-fi)

Diz, Anya, Jeasyn, and Remi – a group of four friends – run an illegal business to help make ends meet. As Diz’s three friends are set to leave in a week, they are offered one last job – collecting a newly discovered kind of maz (magic) for a highly lucrative reward. The money could change everything for Diz, making it possible for her friends to stay. Unfortunately, the job is too good to be true.

The maz blows up in their faces, killing many bystanders. Soon they will discover a conspiracy that goes far beyond anything they had anticipated when they initially signed up for the job.

This book has been such a wonderful ride. There is action, mystery, romance, and much more. Diz, Anya, Jeasyn, and Remi are a delightful set of characters with whom you will want to hang out. The way in which these characters complement each other is highly enjoyable.

Diz is a badass character and a wizard with technology, and each of the others also has something to offer. The romance is beautiful, a slow burn. I had never read anything with a gender-neutral character before. While the pronoun “They” threw me off a bit at first, it quickly became second nature. It truly love Remi’s character.

The world-building within this book is well executed and brings something new to the table – magic and technology are intertwined with a unique twist. The mystery behind the Maz-15 is very intriguing and a real page-turner. The writing is also engaging, and the format makes the book a very easy read. I highly recommend this book: it is definitely a five-star read.
