Scavenge The Stars by Tara Sim is an amazing young adult fantasy. The riveting story, published by Disney Hyperion, will be released on January 7, 2020.
Synopsis
When Amaya rescues a mysterious stranger from drowning, she fears her rash actions have earned her a longer sentence on the debtor ship where she’s been held captive for years. Instead, the man she saved offers her unimaginable riches and a new identity, setting Amaya on a perilous course through the coastal city-state of Moray, where old-world opulence and desperate gamblers collide.
Amaya wants one thing: revenge against the man who ruined her family and stole the life she once had. But the more entangled she becomes in this game of deception—and as her path intertwines with the son of the man she’s plotting to bring down—the more she uncovers about the truth of her past. And the more she realizes she must trust no one…
Packed with high-stakes adventure, romance, and dueling identities, this gender-swapped retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo is the first novel in an epic YA fantasy duology, perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Sabaa Tahir, and Leigh Bardugo.

Review
After seven years of hard labor on a debtor ship to pay off her family’s debts, Amaya aka Silverfish is only a few days away from freedom. When a man falls in the water, she saves him from drowning. This act sets up a chain of events that will unravel her world and set her on a path for revenge.
The man she rescued trains her, and soon, she will pose as a countess, set to right years of wrongdoings. However, she does not expect to meet Cayo, the son of the man she vowed to destroy. As she digs deeper into her past, buried secrets will be uncovered. She cannot trust anyone.
This book is an interesting read. The writing is beautiful. I very much enjoyed how everything clicked together. The main characters are clearly defined, but I wish I had more on the secondary characters. Amaya is a strong character, and I loved this about her. One thing I particularly enjoyed is that some characters seem to be indifferently attracted to males or females. There is no judgment or care in the choice. I also love some of the nicknames (i.e., “Dead shot” for a girl who works with Amaya).
This story is a retelling, and I will be honest. I read it such a long time ago that I barely remember the original story, but the main theme is there with some nice tweaks. Now, I liked the story, but I did not fall in love with it. At times, it dragged a little, or maybe it was me. The story is interesting, but for reasons I still cannot pinpoint, I did not engage as much as I wanted with the story. Overall, this is more of a 3.5 stars for me.
